ESV Translation Word Variation?
Listened to Matthew 23 being read and there was a difference between some words printed and read about 3 times. Why? Which is the "latest" text? My hard copies follow the "read" text? Need some explanation of differences.

Sorry for the delay in response here! We implemented a small number of changes to the ESV text and notes, similar to what most translations have done in the years following their initial publication. Compared to the number of changes made in recent years to other leading translations, the 2011 changes to the ESV represent a very, very small fraction of a percentage. Most changes are minor, involving mostly grammar, punctuation, notes, and other features.

The text on ESVBible.org is from the 2011 text edition. The audio will be updated in the very near future. Print editions with the 2011 text changes will read "ESV Text Edition: 2011" immediately below the copyright notice at the top of the copyright page.

Yes. Also in Genesis 22v1, 7 and 11. Printed text correctly states "Here am I". the on-line text states "here I am".
The on-line text "here I am" only implies Abraham's geographical position.
The printed "here am I" implies that Abraham is making himself available to be used by God.
This suggests a human error when typing the on-line text.

This would depend on when the printed edition you are viewing was published. There was an update in 2007 and another in 2011 to the ESV text, and the text that is displaying online is the 2011. There were a few word changes in the 2011 text, which are what you are probably seeing. To confirm this, simply look at the copyright page in your print Bible to see what year the ESV Text Edition is. This can be found near the top of the copyright page in your Bible.

Is the online ESV Bible a newer (or older) text edition than the physical ESV Bible (2007 text edition)?
The reason for this question is because there are discrepancies in the main text between the online and the physical (2007) ESV Bible. One example:
Online: 1 Samuel 13:1 reads, "Saul lived for one year and then became king, and when he had reigned for two years over Israel,"
Physical: the same verse reads, "Saul was ... years old when he began to reign, and he reigned ... and two years over Israel."

Why are some words different in the ESV Study Bible versus the ESV Journalling Bible? Is this a mistake, or is it normal for there to be word variation even between the same Bible translation?

I have to say guys, that despite word revisions etc, which have been the topic of this thread, I have to confess this ESV Bible has been the best Bible I have ever had the good fortune to posess.
The on-line resource also makes studying the truth of God's word a joy.

Philippians 1:17" This is how it is written but it is read "rivalry" instead of "selfish ambition". Very small but thought I'd let you know. Love this gift you give to us all. Philippians 2:14 - "Do all things without grumbling or disputing" (the on-line text), is read by both McLean and Cochran as "Do all things without grumbling or questioning." - which agree with my printed version.
(And if this posting duplicates what I thought I had already submitted, sorry)-
interpreting the text doesn't seem to be a problem in this case. Obeying it is often when we begin to stumble!!

Romans 1:13 on the ESV web site study bible ESV is missing words from the printed ESV bible that I purchased. Therefore, I cannot recommend the web site to friends anymore. It should match the printed Bible perfectly.

1I think having this list would bless many: to understand how translation works and to bolster our trust in the process by increasing transparency. I'm not suggesting the changes are bad or decrease my trust. They don't.

The audio play back of Romans 5:3 is inaccurate according to the text, the reader isn't reading the text but different words. Probably equivalent meaning but not the text none the less.

I am very angry with the people at Crossway Books Publishing. I have just found out that they have released a 2011 revision of the ESV bible. While it is not a huge revision, there are several changes made in the text.(e.g. 'slave' being mostly replaced by 'bond-servant')
You may be wondering why I am angry about this. Well, I have spent the last two years of my life memorizing books of the New Testament. It has been a difficult task, but with the Lord's help, I have managed to memorize fifteen books. I was however using the ESV 2007 revision, which used to be found on the Crossway Books, ESV Bible website. I had put off buying a new ESV bible, because I could find the text online, and enjoyed being able to adjust the font size and layout of the text.
But now I am looking to buy a Bible, for when I am travelling. The ESV Legacy Bible and the Clarion Bible looked perfect for my needs. There is just one problem. Crossway decided to revise the ESV text this year. So now, if I wish to purchase a new bible in these formats, I must get it in the 2011 revision, and have to either overlook the variations in the new text, or I have to re-memorize those passages that have changed.
Mark, can you please let Crossway know that it is inconsiderate of them not to warn people that they are revising their ESV text? And can you please have to post on their website the changes that have been made, and the reasons for these changes? These changes have cause much confusion in our church.

You guys could avoid so much trouble by just posting on your website that there have been changes made to the 2011 ESV text. Some sort of announcement would reduce the number of emails you get from people who are noticing variations between their phsyical bibles and the online ESV text. Just a thought.

Most changes are minor, involving mostly grammar, punctuation, notes, and other features. A number of these get caught and submitted by our readings; thanks for that!
No translation team is perfect. As such, there will most likely continue to be new insight into how we could translate certain things more accurately to the text grammatically. There will also, with a text so large, undoubtedly be punctuation corrections that will need to be made. I hope that this doesn't nullify anything that you committed to memory, being that the changes were small and mainly grammar and punctuation in nature. As such, I think you can still be confident in what you memorized. If we waited to memorize portions of scripture for a translation devoid of the need for the updates we did we'd most likely never memorize any scripture haha!- view 2 more comments

Wow Christian! What an amazing memory! Why don't you try memorizing the original greek? You'd save a fortune on updated bibles and wouldn't need a carry on when you travel.

Christian Cerna, I hope to update soon with a more detailed explanation of the changes made in the 2011 update. Nevertheless, after reading the changes in those two links I think I have to humbly disagree. The changes outlined there do seem fairly small, both in number of verses per book and in number of words per chapter. They also don't seem to change the meaning but seem to make the passage a bit more clear in the wording. I'm sorry if you disagree! Like I said, I hope to update soon with a more detailed explanation of the changes made.

Matt - I sincerely appreciate all that Crossway has done with the ESV. Be encouraged. Christian seems more interested in letting you know how much he has done than what Christ has done. I wonder if he memorized Romans 12:18 - "If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all."

First of all, thank you for the ESVOnline site. It is a tremendous resource.
I noticed while listening/reading online that there is a discrepancy in I Cor 9:10. The online text reads, "Does he not certainly speak for our sake? ..." But, the printed and audio text reads, "Does he not speak entirely for our sake? ..."

Just want to point out that for the online version of the ESV Study Bible, 2 Timothy 3:17 says: "that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." Instead of saying: "that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work." I will push my nerd glasses up now.
By the way, this version is amazing. I absolutely love it!

Why are there differences between my printed (hardcopy) ESV Bible and the translation online? I've noticed this a number of times but just ran across another example in Jude 12. In my printed Bible it has the word "blemishes" with a footnote that says "Or reefs". But on esvbible.org it says "reefs" with the footnote "Or are blemishes". (I know that's not actually a different translation but it is a difference in the printed verse.)What's up?

The printed text of Psalm 22:7 says, "they make mouths at me;" while the audio by David Cochran Heath says "they make THEIR mouths at me" (emphasis added). Which is correct?

The ESV translation on you online site is not the same as is printed in 1 Corinthians 10:1. The online sites appears as follows: "For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers," and the printed text of the ESV Study Bbile is, "For I want you to know brothers..." I thioght you would want to know.

Song of Solomon - I'm reading the ESV study bible and the headings in my hard copy don't match the on-line version. For instance, the heading for chapter 3 verse 6 in my study bible is "He Arrives for the Wedding" while the on-line version is "Solomon Arrives for the Wedding". The introductory material in my study bible talks about the "Shepherd hypothesis" as an alternative interpretation while the on-line seems to embrace it. Have you decided the Shepherd hypothesis is correct? I'm not judging either way I just want to understand if there's been a change in direction. Thank you - Lance

I just recieved the 2007 ESV bible as a gift and was studying with the mcarthur king james study bible. Does anyone know if this will or could be a problem with using this bible instead of the king james version. I dont want to offend anyone at my study groups during the week but I really love this bible as it was given to me by a special family member and now own it. I have started 6-7 weeks ago with bible study and am just hoping this ESV version will be ok and able to follow the others using king james version bibles. In any case, God blessed me to recieve his word through this bible given to me as a gift and will be using this from now on. Anyone think my pastor will be upset or should I be fine. Thank you. I attend Gracelife and is open christian but used to be baptist backround. God Bless

Hi Dan - I've looked at a lot of Bible versions and the one that I use daily is the ESV.The KJV is a wonderful version and I especially like reading the Gospels in the KJV. But there is no one "right" Bible except the one that speaks to you through the Holy Spirit. The only "right" version would be the original Hebrew/Greek (and in some cases Aramaic) text; after all, that's what the translators used to create the various versions. In my personal Bible study I often turn to other versions for comparison and meaning. I can't imagine a pastor getting mad at you for reading God's Word. God did't create the KJV, man did in that all English translations are the work of God fearing, Holy Spirit filled, prayerfully considerate, panels of flawed human beings. Your pastor may prefer the KJV and it may be challenging at times to follow along in a different version but he shouldn't get mad at you for investing in God's Word. My best advice? Pray. And if the Holy Spirit leads you to the ESV, KJV, or whatever version then trust Him.

I have found while studying for SS lessons and sermons that the ESV online uses different words at times that my print ESV and my iPad version don't have. The most recent example I found was in Philippians 2:3 using "selfish ambition" instead of "rivalry." Is this due to constantly trying to make the product better? I agree in this passage for sure that "selfish ambition" is a better translation. My question is can you also update the iPad/iPhone versions when the online is updated? I preach from my iPad so having it already changed in there as well would be fantastic! Also though, I would like to know how much words are being changed? It seems that people in the congregation with an ESV might be confused if their paper Bibles do not match the one I may be reading? Thanks!

The electronic version of the ESV contains the word "great" before fear in Luke 2:9. However, in the print version this word is missing.
